Joseph G. Jewart

Joseph G. Jewart, 94, of Blairsville, PA passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Beacon Ridge, Indiana, PA.

The son of Charles G. and Nettie (Ferguson) Jewart, he was born April 13, 1922 in New Bethlehem, PA.

Mr. Jewart was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Blairsville, AARP, member of the war class at Clarion State College and Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

He graduated from New Bethlehem High School and Clarion State College with a Bachelors of Science in Education and played football while attending Clarion. He received his Masters degree and guidance certification from the University of Pittsburgh and also attended Penn State and IUP night classes.

He was a US Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Jewart was a teacher and guidance counselor at Coraopolis Public Schools for 11 years from 1947-1958 and was a principal at Blairsville Senior High School for 22 years from 1958-1980.

He enjoyed being with his family, watching Steelers on TV and gardening.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Phyllis M. (Males) Jewart whom he married August 24, 1947; four daughters, Linda Steel (Carl) of Indiana; Janice Baccamazzi of Indiana; Patricia Korywchak (Richard) of Indiana and Diane Grejtak (Kevin) of Blairsville; five grandchildren, Daniel DeGruttola, Nicholas DeGruttola, Benjamin DeGruttola, Vincent DeGruttola, Sr. and Joseph Baccamazzi; five great grandchildren, Dominic DeGruttola, Alyssa DeGruttola, Grace DeGruttola, Vincent DeGruttola, Jr. and Madison DeGruttola.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Jewart; two half-brothers, Harvey Forrester and Denver Forrester; a half-sister, Mary Briggs and a son-in-law, Martin Baccamazzi.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Dan Cunkelman officiating.

Interment will be in the Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville, PA.

Military services will be accorded by Blairsville VFW Post #5821 and American Legion Post #0407.
