Frank Joseph Ometz, Sr., 89, of New Derry, PA passed away on Friday, August 22, 2014 at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, H.J. Heinz Community Living Center, Aspinwall, PA. The son of Frank and Mary (Ogrinc) Ometz, he was born May 13, 1925 in Luciusboro, PA. Mr. Ometz was a member of the Gray Station Community Church and the Derry Area Historical Society. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Prior to his retirement in 1986, he was employed by Latrobe Steel for 35 years. He loved his garden and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Surviving are two sons, Frank J. Ometz, Jr. and his wife, Roseanne of Ligonier and Matthew E. Ometz and his partner, Phillip M. Herrington, III of Pittsburgh and a daughter, Farris L. Welch and her husband, Joseph C. Jr. of Beavercreek, OH; two grandchildren, Samuel S. Conley and Aaron J. Ometz; four great grandchildren, Olivia R., Rachel L., Judah S. and Jonathan A. Conley. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma R. (Cobes) Ometz on January 9, 2011 and a granddaughter, Rachel E. Conley on February 22, 2011. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday at the funeral home with Rev. James R. Henigin officiating. Interment will be in the Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville, PA. Military services will be accorded by the Blairsville VFW Post #5821 and American Legion Post #0407. Memorial contributions may be made to VAPHS, H.J.
