Robert Lawrence Leigey, 90, of Blairsville, PA passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2014 in the Indiana Regional Medical Center, Indiana, PA. The son of William and Mae (Voinchet) Liegey, he was born March 28, 1924 in Frenchville, Clearfield Co., PA. Bob was a member of SS Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, and served on the Angels of Compassion Ministry. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Sergeant Leigey was a forward observer in the 283rd field artillery battalion and was awarded a bronze star for "heroic achievement in military operations against the enemy in Belgium and Germany" in connection with the defense of a thinly held line. He was employed by Penelec, Homer City Plant, for 22 years, retiring in 1986. He was one of the first maintenance mechanics when the plant opened, and was known for his unique and innovative solutions to challenging mechanical problems. Bob was an avid outdoorsman well into his late 80s. He enjoyed traveling with his late wife Helen, to Texas, Florida and Alaska. Surviving are his children, James Leigey and his partner, Dori Sunday of State College; Linda Naugle and her husband, William of Tyrone; Dan Leigey and his wife, Louise of Shelocta and Barbara DeBiase and her partner, Jon Henderson of Boulder, CO; 10 grandchildren, Katherine Leigey, Dr. Margaret Leigey, Dr. Daniel Leigey, David Naugle, Dr. Jodi Camberg, Cory Leigey, Zachary Leigey, Matthew Leigey, Peter DeBiase and Jill DeBiase; two great grandchildren, Kohen and Anderson Camberg. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen (Claffey) Leigey in 1999 and his brother, Dr. Francis Liegey. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday in the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA where a Wake service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday in SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, PA with Fr. Stephen R. Bugay as celebrant. Interment will be in Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville. Military services will be accorded by Blairsville VFW Post #5821 and the American Legion Post #0407. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Keystone Elk Country Alliance, 134 Homestead Drive, Benezette, PA 15821 (http://www.experienceelkcountry.com/support). Donations stay in Pennsylvania and support the elk herd habitat and conservation efforts.
