Margie Nell George, 96, of S. Spring Street, Blairsville, PA passed away in her home on Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Born on May 30, 1915 in Black Lick, she was one of two children of Joseph and Madge(Cunningham)Shrom. Her brother, Joseph Shrom preceded her in death. She lived in Black Lick most of her life, graduating from Blairsville High School and later attended Indiana State Teachers College, majoring in education.Well known in her community, Margie Nell taught kindergarten for 27 years in the Burrell Township Elementary School. She is still remembered by her former pupils for her special love, patience and guidance.In addition to working a full time job, she spent countless hours contributing to her community. Through her leadership and volunteerism, she quietly dedicated herself to the well being of others.She was a member of the Blairsville United Presbyterian Church. Her church activities included Sunday school teacher, choir leader, member of session, and president of the Women's Presbytery. Margie Nell shared her gifts with many other organizations. She was a member and past matron of Blairsville Chapter #166 Order of the Eastern Star. For many years she worked at the Indiana Hospital as operator of the hospitality cart. She delivered Meals on Wheels, was on the board of directors of the Visiting Nurses Association, participated in Salvation Army projects and volunteered at St. Andrew's Village. After her retirement from teaching, she became particularly active in the Evergreen Chapter of AARP, eventually serving as president. For her outstanding work, the Indiana Chapter of the American Association of University Women selected her as a 1998 notable woman.Margie Nell dedicated her life to "the giving of herself to others." She has set a wonderful role model for her family, her profession and her community. We all have been blessed to know and love her for her unselfishness, her loyalty and her dedication. She continues to bless the hearts of many, as we celebrate her life.She is survived by her loving children, Ann Taylor of Brigantine, NJ and Jim George and wife, Bobbie of Bakersfield, CA; daughter-in-law and friend, Marilyn George of Palo Alto, CA; six grandchildren, Dustin Taylor and wife, Lindsay; Erin Taylor; Jason George and wife, Erin; Gretchen George; Shelley Johnson and husband, Brandon and Christy Cates and husband, Eric; seven great grandchildren, Devon (3), Keira (1), Lauren (6), Jenna (3), Cameron (13), Cassidy (14) and Aiden (8): and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death her parents, her loving husband, J. Herbert George and her brother.The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Friday at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church, 137 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA with Rev. Timothy R. Monroe officiating.Interment will be in the Blairsville Cemetery.
