Nicholas "Mickey" Matviya, 92, of Blairsville, PA (Bairdstown) passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2009 in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital, Latrobe, PA.The son of Andy Matviya Sr. and Mary (Kochis) Matviya, he was born June 20, 1917 in the village of Peanut, PA.Mr. Matviya was a member of SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Rural Letter Carriers Association, VFW Post #5821, 24th Infantry Division Association, National Rifle Association and the Blairsville Sportsmen's Club.He loved to hunt groundhogs.He graduated from Derry Township High School in 1934 and was a US Army veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific for over three years with the 24th Division, 11th Field Artillery.He retired in 1980 from the Blairsville Post Office as a rural mail carrier on RR3 with 35 years of service.Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mildred "Peaches" (Gamble) Matviya to whom he married May 13, 1948; a son, Thomas Matviya and his wife, Mary Anne of McKees Rocks and a daughter, Patricia Benyo and her husband, John of Latrobe; a grandson, David Benyo of Irwin; a brother, Mike Matviya and his wife, Katherine of Port St. Lucie, FL and a sister, Anna Groft and her husband, Bill of Blairsville and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Andy Jr. and John and a sister, Mary Yuzawich.The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Wednesday in the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA where a Wake service will be held at 8:30 P.M. Wednesday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday in SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, with Fr. Chester J. Raimer as celebrant.Interment will be in SS Simon & Jude Cemetery, Blairsville.Military services will be accorded by the Blairsville VFW Post #5821 and the American Legion Post #0407.
