John Zedick, 80, of Blairsville, PA passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Beacon Ridge, Indiana, PA.The son of Michael and Mary (Shubuck) Zedick, he was born March 21, 1929 in Avella, PA.Mr. Zedick was the mayor of Blairsville for the last eight years.He was a member of SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, where he was a lector for 30 years. A member and Paul Harris Fellow of Blairsville Rotary Club, Blairsville VFW Post #5821, American Legion Post #0407 and the Promise Keepers. He was a member of many bands over the past 66 years, the last being the Grand Staff. He had a passion for boy's teenage baseball and coached and played softball for 32 years.He graduated from Derry Twp. High School in 1947 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and masters in education from Indiana State Teachers College. He taught for 35 years in the Indiana Area School District, retiring in 1992.Mr. Zedick was a US Army veteran of the Korean War and was very active in starting the veteran's funeral honor guard.Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Betty Lou (Petrarca) Zedick to whom he married August 1, 1953; a son, John Michael Zedick and his wife, Sabra of Flag Staff, Arizona; three daughters, Mary Murphy and her husband, Coleman of Blairsville; Beth O'Barto and her husband, Shawn of Blairsville and Susan Zedick of Blairsville; eight grandchildren, Bryan Bialas, Kristy Bialas, Hannah Zedick, Christopher Zedick, Ali O'Barto, Dan Zedick, Zackary Murphy and Laurel O'Barto; a brother, Michael Zedick of Raleigh, NC and a sister, Josephine Billingsley of Hillside.He was preceded in death by his parents.The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Friday at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA where a Wake service will be held on Friday at 8:30 P.M.A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday in SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, with Fr. Chester J. Raimer as celebrant.Interment will be in SS Simon & Jude Cemetery, Blairsville.Military services will be accorded by the Blairsville VFW Post #5821 and the American Legion Post #0407.Memorial contributions may be made to Asera Care Hospice, 706 Eisenhower Boulevard, Suite 3, Johnstown, PA 15904 or to the Blairsville Public Library, 113 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA 15717
