Mary Martha (Barr) Akins, 77, of Blairsville, PA passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Beacon Ridge, Indiana, PA.The daughter of Ernest and Martha (Holby) Barr, she was born September 17, 1931 in Blairsville, PA.Mrs. Akins attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and the Free Methodist Church, Blairsville.She was a member of the American Legion Post #0407Auxiliary and the VFW Post #5821 Auxiliary.Mrs. Akins lived her entire life in Blairsville and was employed by Torrance State Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1996.She enjoyed sitting on her porch at home.Surviving are two sons, David Akins and his wife, Patty of Blairsville and William Akins and his wife, Diana of Derry; a daughter, Brenda Lear and her husband, Dan of Blairsville; eight grandchildren, James Lear, Eli Akins, Jason Scott Lear, Michael Akins, Jamie Copney, Heidi Jack, Kelli Akins and Billijo Akins; nine great grandchildren and two sisters, Joyce Rishor of Hampton, VA and Donna Boyer of Derry.She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Harry "Hank" Akins on August 29, 2002.The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Saturday at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home with Rev. John McMannus and Rev. Richard McClurg co-officiating.Interment will be in the Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville.
