Ann L. (Kowalcheck) Lazar, 91, of Blairsville, PA passed away on Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center, Indiana, PA.The daughter of Dimetro and Justine (Pekalka) Kowalcheck, she was born September 30, 1917 in West Newton, PA.Mrs. Lazar was a member of SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, where she sang in the women's choir. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Theresa #562, a former den mother and Girl Scout leader, member of many women's bowling leagues and a charter member of Chestnut Ridge Women's Golf League.She was an award-winning artist for over 40 years.Surviving are three children, John V. Lazar and wife, Beverly of Henderson, NC; Valerie Orris and husband, John of Johnstown and Anita Smith and husband, Gary of Blairsville; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Lazar of Belle Vernon; seven grandchildren, Jay, Kristie, Justin, Jamie, Larissa and Tommy Lazar and Gregg Orris; five great grandchildren, Nicholas and Jessica Marshall, Cody Patton, Isabella and Jacob Lazar; two brothers and two sisters, Harry Kowalcheck, John Kowalcheck, Julia Materkowski and Helen Megela, all of West Newton.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Valentine John Lazar, Jr. on January 7, 2002; a son, Thomas in 2007 and a brother, Michael Kowalcheck on June 9, 2009.The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Monday at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA where a Wake service will be held on Monday at 8:30 P.M. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, with Fr. Chester J. Raimer as celebrant.Interment will be in West Newton Cemetery, West Newton, PA.Catholic Daughters of the Americas will recite the rosary in the funeral home on Monday at 3:00 P.M.Memorial contributions may be made to the SS Simon & Jude Piano Fund.
