Helen B. Goldfarb of North Canton, OH formerly of Blairsville, PA passed away at the Windsor Medical Center after an extended illness on September 13, 2008. She was born Helen Brodsky in Brooklyn, NY on February 12, 1919. Her family moved to Canton, OH where she graduated from McKinley High School. Her singing talent took her back to New York where she studied voice. She and her sister, Irene, used their musical talents to entertain US soldiers during WW II for the USO in Harrisburg, PA. After the war, Helen settled in Western Pennsylvania and married in 1946 Lt. Colonel Philip Goldfarb of Blairsville, PA who operated Goldfarb's Department Store with his father, Benjamin Goldfarb. Helen and Philip were married 52 years until Philip's death in 1998. In Blairsville, Helen was active in civic groups, enjoyed playing golf, bridge, continued her singing (often as a soloist), and began an interest in china painting, while raising a family of four children. Helen and Philip enjoyed their retirement in both Canton, OH and Sarasota, FL. Helen continued her artwork and became accomplished, not only as a china painter, but also as a color pencil artist. She will be remembered for her talents, her fondness for both family and friends, and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by brothers, Stanley Brodsky and David (Charlotte) Brodsky, and a sister, Irene Schwartz, all of Greensboro, NC; children, Ruth Assimacopoulos of Brooklyn, NY; Howard Goldfarb of Clarksburg, PA; Gail (Marshall) Bleckman of North Canton, OH and Bruce Goldfarb of Waltham, MA; grandchildren, Rachel Bleckman of Columbus, OH and Dara (Andrew) Greene of Toronto, Ontario.The family would like to thank the staff at Windsor Medical Center for the care given to Helen in the last year of her life.A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 16, 2008 in the Beth Israel section of the Oakland Cemetery, Indiana, PA.In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Helen's memory to, Blairsville Public Library, 113 N.
