Alphonse Vincent Germano, Jr., 60, of Derry, PA (Derry Twp.) passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital, Latrobe.The son of Alphonse V. Germano Sr. and Rose M. (McAdams) Germano, he was born May 5, 1947 in Greensburg.Vince was of the Catholic faith. He graduated from Greensburg-Salem High School in 1966 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the US Air Force.Vince worked at Torrance State Hospital as their fire marshal for 24 years. He was the 1st Assistant Chief at the Derry Volunteer Fire Department and taught hazmat classes throughout Pennsylvania. He was involved with the Greensburg, Derry, Blairsville and Bolivar Fire Departments for the past 35 years.He was a social member of the Hilltop Club of Greensburg and enjoyed fly-fishing and was an avid fly tier.Surviving are his wife, Carol F. (Paouncic) Germano, whom he married on July 17, 1981; two sons, Brian D. Prola and wife, Kellie of Greensburg and Scott A. Prola and wife, Leslie of Greensburg; three grandchildren, Conner D. Prola, Caleb M. Prola and Emma N. Prola; mother-in-law, Emily Paouncic of Blairsville; two sisters, Rebecca Pannichella and husband, Michael of Greensburg and Patricia Pyle and husband, Ken of Greensburg; three nieces, Regina McDonnell, Lynn Andrascak and Angela Pannichella and two nephews, Nicholas Germano and Bryce Andrascak.He was preceded in death by his parents. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Wednesday at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA where a Wake service will be held on Wednesday at 8:30 P.M.A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday at SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, with Fr. Chester J. Raimer as celebrant.Interment will be private.Memorial contributions may be made to the Derry Volunteer Fire Department, 116 East Second Ave., Derry, PA 15627
