John F. "Jack" Halmes Sr., 73, of Blairsville, PA passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2004 in the Latrobe Area Hospital, Latrobe, PA.The son of Stephen and Anna Popies Holmes, he was born August 29, 1931 in Coral, PA.Mr. Halmes was a member of SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, PA. He was one of the original-founding members of the Graceton-Coral Sportsman's Club, member of the Red Barn Sportsmen's Club and was a society member of the Italian Club, Blairsville, PA.He graduated from Homer City High School in 1949 and was a Korean Conflict veteran, having served in the US Army.Prior to his retirement on September 1, 1996, he was employed by FMC Syntron, Homer City for 34 years.He loved being involved with his children and grandchildren in all their activities.Jack was a beloved husband, father and grandfather to his wife of 45 years, Patricia "Pat" Colench Halmes, to whom he married November 7, 1959; six children, Susan Snyder and her husband, Calvin of Blairsville, PA; Steven Halmes Sr. and his wife, Lisa of Blairsville, PA; JoAnn Halmes Coler and her husband, Robert of Greenville, SC; John Halmes Jr. of Blairsville, PA; Patrick Halmes of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and Paula Williams and her husband Matthew of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Jessica Snyder, Steven Halmes Jr., Nicholas Halmes, Mitchell Snyder and Hannah Snyder. Surviving are five siblings, Teresa Yancy of Homer City, PA; Edward Holmes of Cleveland, OH; Dorothy Holmes of Coral, PA; Mildred Dechman and her husband, John of Josephine, PA and William Holmes and his wife, Margaret of Coral, PA.He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph Holmes and a sister, Agnes Vreslovic.The family will receive friends on Monday from 7 to 9 P.M. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA where a Wake service will be held on Tuesday at 8:30 P.M. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. in the SS Simon & Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville, PA with Fr. Chester J. Raimer as celebrant. Interment will be in SS Simon & Jude Cemetery, Blairsville, PA.Military services will be accorded by the Blairsville VFW Post #5821 and the American Legion.
