George S. Henigin, age 89 of Blairsville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2, 2020 in Hardy, Virginia. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife Amelia (Amy) shared 64 years of marriage together with many wonderful memories.
As a young man, George was proud that he had the opportunity to serve his country by enlisting in the Army and stationed in Germany along with his brother Herb. Upon his return to Blairsville, he became an active member of the Blairsville VFW Honor Guard for many years and also played a major role in documenting and publishing the military stories of over 100 of Blairsville’s vets. In addition to his military service, George had a 35 year career at Blairsville Westinghouse Electric, was a lifetime and active member of the SS Simon & Jude Catholic Church, and was a marathon runner, a skilled artisan making wood crafts for his family and friends, and an avid reader who especially enjoyed Louis L’Amour and books about the Wild Wild West. George is preceded in death by his parents Herbert W. Henigin and Mary Ann (Flynn) Henigin, and his brother Herbert F. Henigin. Surviving are his wife, Amelia (Zona) Henigin, his daughter Kathleen and her husband Brian Stearman, Sister-in-law Cecelia Henigin, brothers Samuel Henigin and Rev. James Henigin in addition to grandchildren Aubree, Bryan, Bill and Jen as well as 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at the SS Simon & Jude Catholic Church in Blairsville. Reverend Stephen R. Bugay will be officiating. Interment will immediately follow at the SS Simon & Jude Catholic Cemetery. Upon the completion of the Interment, family will receive friends and family at a luncheon back at the Church’s dining hall.In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to SS Simon and Jude Catholic Church or the Parkinson’s Foundation. Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount/ Smith Mountain Lake, VA and Shoemaker Funeral Home is making arrangements in Blairsville, PA.
Military services will be accorded by Blairsville VFW Post #5821 and American Legion Post #0407.
