Veida Lida (McHenry) Dahlin, 100, of Indiana, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
A daughter of the late Herbert L. and Emma J. (Groat) McHenry, Veida was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Indiana.
Veida was dedicated to God. For many years she was a member of Grove Chapel Lutheran Church, where they made applebutter once a year and where she also taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the PA Association of Retired State Employees. Veida had an interesting start to her career. On Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese, which naturally led the United States to enter World War II. During this time, Veida and her twin sister Velda made hand grenades for our troops. Ultimately, she became a social worker and for 28 years, she guided numerous individuals and families through the Department of Public Welfare system. Veida was a proud Red Cross blood donor, donating 10 gallons of blood, and only missed voting three times in her life. She loved all books, visiting the Indiana Free Library often. She even wrote a book about fathers’ experiences in World War I called “As A Private Saw It”. In her spare time, she and her late husband loved to ballroom dance. Veida loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews - her family meant everything to her.
She is survived by a daughter, Carey Velda Sabo and husband Bill, of Indiana; grandchildren, Jeff Deptola and wife Jade; Alex Sabo and wife Lisa; and Jenny Klimkowski and husband Sean; grandchildren, Jackson, Sophie, Will and Sean Jr.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, William G. Dahlin in 1989, at their 40th anniversary celebration; a daughter, Cheri Dahlin in 2015; an identical twin, Velda Grandjean in 2023; a brother, Jim McHenry in 2017; a special cousin, MaryLou Skoda; a sister-in-law, Dottie McHenry-Fones; numerous other cousins in the Skoda, Groat and McHenry families; and two great-grandchildren, Faith and Hope Sabo.
There will be no visitation at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Grove Chapel Lutheran Church, 1990 Rt 119 Hwy N, Indiana. Robinson-Lytle-Shoemaker Funeral Home in Indiana has been entrusted with the arrangements.
The family would like to thank Dr. Cash and his medical team, Dr. McKirgan and his medical team, Dr. Ramineni and his medical team, Senior Life staff, VNA/Concordia staff and “the around the horn neighbors”.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorial contributions be made to Grove Chapel Lutheran Church.
